Rebecca Warren Biography

Rebecca Jane Warren, born in 1965 in Pinhoe, Exeter, is a distinguished British visual artist and sculptor renowned for her innovative and thought-provoking works. Warren's artistic journey began with her education at Goldsmiths' College, University of London, where she pursued Fine Art from 1989 to 1992 and received a BA (Hons). She further honed her skills by attaining a Masters in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, in 1992-93. Following her formal education, Warren was an artist-in-residence at the Ruskin School, Oxford University, from 1993 to 1994, marking the early stages of her career in the art world. Warren's artistic oeuvre is characterized by her versatility in working with a variety of materials, including clay, bronze, and steel. Her early sculptures, primarily made using clay, often depicted the nude female form and tackled themes of sexuality. These pieces made reference to other historical works and artists, drawing inspiration from the likes of Robert Crumb, Edgar Degas, and Alberto Giacometti. This period of her work was marked by a collaboration with artist Fergal Stapleton until 1997, which significantly influenced her artistic output. As her career progressed, Warren began to explore more sculptures made in metal media such as bronze and steel. In 2009, she exhibited her first work in welded steel at her exhibition entitled "Feelings," showcasing her evolving artistic style. Her work has been exhibited in major solo surveys, including at the Serpentine Gallery in 2009 and The Renaissance Society in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010. Warren's sculptures are not just literal transcriptions of the human body but are more reflective of the messy vigor and vitality of being alive, often with a sensual flair. Her bronze and unfired-clay sculptures are protean, corporeal presences, sometimes cartoonish or eroticized, like beings made from parts of other beings, or figures in different postures at different times. Warren's work extends beyond sculptures to include vitrines and wall-based collages using neon, wool, pompoms, paper, thread, and less identifiable materials. Her vitrines are neon-lit dioramas of places, moments, or states beneath the surfaces of the world, while her collages operate like signs announcing pleasurable but hard-to-pinpoint states of mind. This diversity in her work demonstrates Warren's ability to manipulate conventional materials with a strong formal awareness, creating something wholly new and injecting them with a sensual physicality. Recognition for Warren's contributions to the art world has been significant. In 2006, she was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize for her sculptural installations in solo shows at Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, and Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne, as well as her work in the Tate Triennial 2006. On 12 March 2014, Warren was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, further cementing her status in the art community. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours for services to art, a testament to her influence and contributions to the field. Warren's work can be found in numerous public collections, showcasing the wide appreciation and recognition of her art. Her sculptures, characterized by their tactile, visceral three-dimensional forms, continue to challenge and inspire audiences worldwide. Rebecca Warren lives and works in London, where she continues to push the boundaries of contemporary sculpture and art.
